She is twenty-two, an orphan, and one of fewer than thirty living Purifiers — the only people who can replace a desalination membrane while the salt is still trying to get in. She was five when the fog took her mother in the open yard: crystal climbing the woman's wrist as she reached for a door she would never touch. Now Kaia keeps a whole city breathing with the same hands — in a place where the Law of Water is absolute, and feeling is a luxury the dead could afford.
Then her dying mentor confesses the lie he certified for a year. The machines keeping the city alive don't have five years left. They have six months.
The cure lies across the Basin of Silence, a dead zone where a human lung crystallizes in six hours. To reach it, Kaia must trust the three kinds of people her city taught her to fear — a desert runner who sleeps facing the door, a broker who is selling everyone, and a girl engineered before the Collapse to be a living key, her own body counting down — and become someone her city has no word for: a person who feels, and acts anyway.
What they find proves the drowned world was no accident. It was a decision — and the sealed, sterile order a grieving commander now offers the survivors would cost them the last private thought any of them will ever have.
A haunting, character-driven climate dystopia grounded in real Earth-systems science — for readers of Emily St. John Mandel's Station Eleven, Cormac McCarthy's The Road, and Emmi Itäranta's Memory of Water.

She was five the night the salt fog took the delta — her mother crystallized reaching for the shelter door, her father shoved her through the gap as it closed. Salón took her in, and Kaia has been buying her right to exist one repair at a time ever since. Now a Class IV Purifier who diagnoses dying machinery by sound alone, she hides a simple arithmetic under her hypercompetence: be useful, or be exiled. When the truth about the water runs out, the girl who survived the fog must walk back into it — by choice.
An Aridian runner who navigates by the taste of the wind and trusts no gift. At nine he walked two days alone out of a white-out. At sixteen, his partner sold their water cache while he slept. His brother died of salt poisoning while the elders hoarded the components that could have saved him — so Marek stole them, and stays furious that it was necessary. "Trust is a luxury. Water is a necessity. Confuse the two, and the desert will correct you." He always sleeps facing the door.
Unit DH-7, Project Meridian. Built before the Collapse to be a key — encrypted access protocols grown into synthetic neural tissue — and smuggled out at age three by a grandmother who wanted her to be a person instead. A countdown burns in her vision that no one can switch off: 47% and falling. Below 30%, her senses fail. Below 5%, she does. She repairs children's water stills among the Exiles, refuses pity, and answers every warning the same way. "Don't call it sacrifice. I was built for this." Her only question is "When?"
Unidad DH-7, Proyecto Meridiano.
Grounded in real Earth-systems science
Anclada en ciencia real del sistema Tierra
The Broken Balance is built on real Earth-systems science, smuggled inside a survival story — never a lecture, always a matter of life and death on the page.
The AMOC collapse. The Atlantic current that moves heat around the planet — its real-world weakening is measured today. In the novel, it dies in 2067, and the rains die with it.
Graphene membranes. The last working desalination plants run on membrane technology pulled from current materials research. When Kaia swaps a membrane under live osmotic load, every number — permeate conductivity, pore collapse, ppm — is right.
Halophyte farming. Salicornia, a real salt-tolerant crop, greens the brine flats in the novel's first harvest — exactly as researchers propose today.
Human adaptation. The Dry Exiles' kidneys concentrate to ~2,000 mOsm/kg. Evolution without permission.
You'll finish the story. The science will follow you home.
